  4. Jenrette convicted in Abscam

  6. "Guilty...guilty...guilty."  The word rolled through a federal
  7. courtroom in Washington, D.C., 72 times last week as twelve
  8. jurors were asked for their verdicts on six charges against the
  9. defendants. Once again, as in the conviction in August of
  10. Democratic Congressman Michael ("Ozzie") Myers of Pennsylvania,
  11. the FBI video tapes from the Abscam investigation had proved
  12. persuasive. Shaken by the barrage, Defendant John W. Jenrette
  13. Jr., a three-term Democratic Congressman from South Carolina,
  14. lowered his head and sobbed. Still red-eyed later, Jenrette
  15. told reporters in a trembling voice, "I can look at my two
  16. beautiful children and my gorgeous wife and say, regardless of
  17. what those tapes say, that I didn't take any money."

  19. But the jurors believed the tapes and not the Congressman, who
  20. was the second to be tried of six House members charged with
  21. bribery in the Abscam operation. "It was all pretty clear in
  22. everyone's mind," said Joseph D. McDonald, a member of the jury
  23. that took only 4 1/2 hours after a five-week trial to convict
  24. Jenrette, 44, and a longtime friend, John R. Stowe, of bribery.
  25. Added McDonald:  "One picture is worth a thousand words."  The
  26. video and telephone tapes showed Stowe accepting $50,000 from
  27. an undercover FBI agent and Jenrette agreeing to back
  28. legislation that would enable a fictitious Arab sheik to settle
  29. permanently in the U.S. The prosecution charged that Stowe had
  30. picked up the money as a middleman to insulate the Congressman
  31. from the payoff.

  33. The jurors were unmoved by Jenrette's testimony that he had been
  34. unfairly trapped. Said Juror Yvonne Bothnel:  "We just did not
  35. see any place where he got his arm twisted,"  Nor were they
  36. swayed by the claim of the defendant that he is an alcoholic and
  37. had been too drunk when meeting with the undercover agents to
  38. know what he was doing. When sentenced, Jenrette could receive
  39. as much as 35 years in prison.
